Accreditation Council for OT Education Adds Complementary and Integrative Health for Well-Being

The Accreditation Council for OT Education (ACOTE) added Complementary and Integrative Health to the standard of Well-Being as an intervention to support well-being in its 2023 Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE®) Standards and Interpretive Guide (effective July 31, 2025).

This is a big step forward to see Complementary and Integrative Health mentioned as part of an ACOTE standard.

Complementary and Integrative Health is included as an example of how to support a person with well-being.

It is not a standard, standing alone, so to speak. However, this encourages OT universities and educators to include these approaches as part of the curriculum when teaching about well-being.

The definition of Complementary and Integrative Health, as outlined by ACOTE, seems very broad.

We are looking forward to more OTs and the recipients of occupational therapy having positive experiences and benefits of Complementary and Integrative Health.

Indeed, these approaches can help not only for rehabilitation, they can assist with prevention and wellness.
